Abstract
Interfunctional coordination within a firm is defined as synchronized effort among functional departments based on close relationships and strict management control to accomplish common goals such as customer value creation and rapid response to changing market environment. Successful supply chain management (SCM) requires not only interfirm cooperation among supply chain partners toward common performance goals but also interfunctional coordination across traditional functional departments within each partner firm to support SCM-related tasks. Regardless of the fact that interfunctional coordination within firms is a prerequisite for supply chain partners to work effectively with each other, research on the nature of interfunctional coordination in the context of SCM is scarce. Therefore, this study attempts to conceptualize the phenomenon called interfunctional coordination clearly, and explain potential antecedents and consequences of it based on existing literature and current management practices. This study also aims to describe how complexity in SCM-related tasks functions as a moderating variable in the causal relationship between intrafirm coordination and interfirm SCM. This research is a typical inductive, theoretical study to develop and propose an integrated theoretical model of interfunctional coordination. The suggested theoretical model can be used as a basis of future theoretical and empirical studies to confirm or disconfirm the presented theory for the advancement of the body of knowledge in the field of SCM.
