It further examines the mediating roles of digital transformation and internal control in this relationship, providing a comprehensive understanding of how IT background at the executive level can drive sustainable innovation. Design/methodology/approach - Utilizing 19,540 firm-year data from Chinese A-share listed companies spanning from 2012 to 2021, this study employs panel regression models complemented by robustness checks and endogeneity adjustments to ensure the reliability and validity of the findings. The analysis is structured to assess direct impacts as well as mediated effects through comprehensive statistical techniques. Findings - The findings reveal that CEOs with IT backgrounds significantly enhance corporate green innovation. Additionally, digital transformation and internal control serve as critical mediators in this relationship, highlighting their roles in enhancing green innovation outcomes. Research implications or Originality - This study provides new insights into the mechanisms through which CEO characteristics, particularly IT background, influence corporate green innovation. It also emphasizes the roles of digital transformation and internal control as mediators. The findings offer valuable implications for policymakers and business leaders on the importance of IT background and knowledge in driving sustainable business practices and innovation. Future research could extend this framework to other contexts and explore the broader economic impacts of green innovation.
