Abstract
This study explored the ways in which two self-construals contribute to social well-being of low-income women. It was hypothesized that the independent self-construal, characterized by being authentic, self-disciplined, and striving for its goals, would influence social well-being through hope; while interdependent self-construal, characterized as perceiving the self in other-oriented relationship, directly influences social well-being as well as indirectly influences it through family support. To examine the hypotheses, this study performed secondary data analyses including 198 women who participated in local community workfare programs. The results were, first, two self-construals were in about a moderate level, and the level of interdependent self-construal was significantly higher. Second, as results of correlational analyses, there were significant positive associations between independent self-construal and hope, between hope and social well-being, between interdependent self-construal and family support/social well being, and between family support and social well-being. Finally, both path analyses of path and the effect decomposition showed that independent self-construalcontributed to social well-being indirectly through hope, while interdependent self-construal contributed directly to social well-being as well as indirectly through family support. Based on these findings, implications and suggestions were discussed.
