일반적으로 카르데날의 작품은 혼란의 도가니로 몰고 간 니카라과 혹은 중앙아메리카의 역사를 반영하여 다층적이고 복잡한 삶의 현실을 그린다. 그러나 그의 『시편』Salmos(1964)은 니카라과나 중앙아메리카의 역사적 상황보다 더 폭넓은 관점으로 접근해야 한다. 그것은 ‘문명화된’ 현대 사회가 양차 세계 대전과 냉전이라는 야만을 향해 나아간 20세기에 대한 강력한 비판이 주를 이루기 때문이다. 『시편』은 구약의 시편과 연결하여 현대 사회의 억압받는 사람들의 고통을 다룬다. 이 시집은 카르데날의 시 세계에서 매우 중요한 위치를 차지하고, 또한 그의 신앙을 드러내는 작품이며, 동시에 20세기 초반의 세계 역사를 상호텍스트로 사용하고 있기에, 서로 모순적으로 보이는 가톨릭 신앙과 정치화의 관점에서 심층적으로 다뤄질 필요가 있는 작품이다. 『『시편』의 지시물은 니카라과와 라틴아메리카뿐만 아니라 유럽과 서양의 역사적 상황과 상호텍스트성 관계를 이룬다. 또한 이 시집의 상호텍스트는 성경 시편과의 관계를 넘어 토머스 머튼(Thomas Merton)이나 십자가의 성 요한(San Juan de la Cruz)처럼 시편에 바탕을 두고 세상을 해석하고 이해하려는 작가들로 확장할 필요도 있다. 이 글은 이 시집에서 드러나는 카르데날의 대표적 시학인 ‘외향주의 exteriorismo’를 상호텍스트성 관점에서 분석하면서, 20세기 전반의 정치 폭력과 전쟁, 그리고 현대의 지배권력을 어떻게 이해하고 있는지 알아보고자 한다.
Abstract
In general, Ernesto Cardenal's works embrace the convulsive history of Nicaragua or Central America and depict the multi- layered and complex reality of life. However, his Salmos(1964) should be approached from a broader perspective than the concrete historical situation of Nicaragua or Central America because it is mainly a strong critique of the twentieth century, which has been directed towards the barbarism of the two world wars and the cold war. Salmos, dealing with the suffering of oppressed people in modern society in connection with the psalms of the Old Testament, occupies a very important place in Cardenal's poetic world and is a work that reveals his faith. The references in Salmos constitute the intertextuality with historical situations in Europe and the West as well as in Nicaragua and Latin America. In addition, the intertextual study of this collection of poems needs to be extended to the writers such as Thomas Merton or San Juan de la Cruz who intended to interpret and understand the world based on the psalms. This article analyzes Cardenal's representative poetics, exteriorismo, from the viewpoint of intertextuality as a means of understanding the political violence and dominant power in the first half of the 20th century.
