‘Ikat’ which was invented in ancient India has been for a long time traditional pattern weaving technique in South East Asian region. However, since the invention of ‘jacquard’ made mass production of colored and patterned fabrics, this traditional weaving technique has been gradually disappearing in fabric industry to be used now only by a small number of fabric artists. In this paper I present a standard procedure for developing modern knit design samples based on Ikat technique. The basic sequence is as follows. 1) Dyeing warps and wefts, 2) Hand weaving, 3) Computerized design processing, 4) Jacquard weaving, 5) Jacquard machine knitting. If the manual for design process using Ikat technique presented in this paper could be generally applied in fabric industry, artistically refined commercial fabric designs will be easier to develop.
