Abstract

Dai Zhen is universally recognized as a leading Qing scholar, but his current reputation differs from how he was viewed in his own time. During modernization, Western philosophical frameworks emphasized ontology and speculation, making Qing textual research seem inadequate. Yet, Dai Zhen’s effort to uncover new truths through textual study has drawn lasting scholarly attention. The author has already organized this topic in a paper published in 2023. Building on that study, the present paper examines how Joseon scholars responded to and received the works of Dai Zhen, a Qing dynasty scholar. The findings reveal that Joseon scholars’ perceptions and evaluations of Dai Zhen were closer to those of pre-modern China and quite different from the views formed in the modern era. It is expected that these results will serve as a supplement to the findings of the 2023 study.
