Abstract

The historiography of intellectual exchange in the Atlantic world has come a long way in the last few decades, but the study of medical knowledge exchange in the transatlantic world still relies heavily on a one-way model of knowledge exchange from the Old World to the New World. This paper examines the transmission of medical knowledge from the United States to England and Europe in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, focusing on the transatlantic network of Benjamin Rush(1746-1813), a prominent American thinker and physician. This paper analyzes Rush’s transatlantic intellectual network, especially as it relates to medical knowledge, using the concepts and analysis of letter exchange, publishing, and the “Persuasive Communities” as a framework. The complex overlap of all these networks demonstrates the transmission of Rush’s medical ideas and knowledge from the New World to the Old World, and this article argues for continued research into more diverse patterns of medical knowledge exchange in the Atlantic world.
