근대계몽기 『교남교육회잡지』의 ‘로컬리티’ 인식과 서사화 전략

경상남북도 지역을 중심으로 한 『교남교육회잡지』는 지역학회지 중 가장 뒤에 발간된 학회지로서, 1909년 4월 25일부터 1910년 5월 25일까지 총 12호를 출간하였다. 『교남교육회잡지』 역시 다른 지역학회지처럼 교육을 강조하며 신학문을 배워야 하고, 사범학교 등을 세워 새로운 학문을 가르치는 인재를 양성하는 것을 목적으로 했다. 특히 교남의 인사들은 작금의 문제들을 구세대들의 안일하고 보수적이며 완고한 태도에서 배태되었다고 보고 이에 대한 책임의식과 비판의식이 두드러졌다. 특히 교남 지역의 구세대들을 스스로 비판하며 성찰하면서 제대로 된 진정한 유교의 도리로 돌아갈 것을 주장했다. 이러한 서사류들은 단순히 구세대들이 주장하는 유교의 사상으로만 이해할 것이 아니라, 교남 인사들의 반성적 사고 속에서 이해되어야 한다. 즉 구세대들의 변질된 유교가 아니라, 제대로 된 유교, 정도의 유교로 돌아가 신학문을 배우고 익혀 백성을 교육하고 새로운 나라를 건설해야 한다는 반성적 사고가 드러나고 있는 것이다. 이는 바로 교남의 지역성, 즉 로컬리티에 뿌리를 둔 깊이 있는 문제 의식에서 파생된 것이다. 또한 교남의 이러한 반성적 사고는 새로운 유교, 혁신유림들과도 연계되면서 근대계몽기와 일제 식민지를 겪으며 삶과 사회를 바꾸어나가려는 운동으로 이어졌다. 이처럼 지역을 기반으로 한 학회지들은 그 기반이 되는 지역을 토대로 지역적 특성을 드러내면서 동시에 시대의 역할을 담당해 나가고 있었다. 또한 근대계몽기 서사류들은 이러한 지역학회지의 의도와 사상을 담지해내며, 새로운 문학의 탄생을 이끌어가고 있었다고 해도 과언이 아닐 것이다.
Abstract
The Journal of the Kyonam Education Association, which focuses on the province of North and South Kyeongsang in Korea, is the last published journal in the local academic journals during the modern Enlightenment era. The Journal of the Kyonam Education Association, similar to other local academic journals, emphasized education and studies on theology and aimed to cultivate talents to teach new disciplines by setting up schools for people. In particular, Kyonam's personnel considered past problems the results of people;s old-fashioned, conservative, and stubborn attitudes. They criticized and reflected on the perspectives of the province’s older generations and insisted on refocusing on true Confucian beliefs. The narratives in the Journal of the Kyonam Education Association should be understood conformance with not only the Confucian ideas of the older generations but also the reflective thoughts of the society’s members. This is derived from the deep problem consciousness rooted the locality of Kyonam. In other words, the sense of crisis and reflective thinking fostered by Confucianism, rather than the outdated Confucian beliefs of older generations, should be applied in the study of theology and used to educate the people to build a new nation based on modern concepts. Accordingly, regional-based journals were playing the role of the times while revealing their local characteristics based on the region on which they are based.
