Distributed-feedback (DFB) fibre lasers have been developed by fibre gratings written on various Er-doped fibres and by introducing a phase shift region in the middle of a grating structure. It was demonstrated that a laser was generated at ~195THz (~1537nm). Both the lasing power and wavelength were dependent on a 980-nm pump power, which could be used for fine tuning of the lasing wavelength. Corresponding to linear birefringence of Er-doped fibres, the DFB fibre laser showed the presence of two polarisation states which were separated by about 1.41GHz. A temperature-compensation package stabilised the lasing wavelength within ±0.03nm in the range of -20oC to 80oC.
