초록

Michael Winterbottom’s Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story is the first film adaptation of Laurence Sterne’s Tristram Shandy. Throughout the adaptation, Winterbottom tries to capture the playfulness which he recognizes as the spirit of Sterne’s novel. The playful structure of both a film-within-a-film which represents mainly the birth episode of the novel and a mockumentary which represents the process of making that film-within-the-film is analogous to the self-conscious narration of the original novel. In the film-within-the-film, Winterbottom uses jump cuts in film editing in order to represent achronological events in the novel. The mockumentary which represents fictional actors and film crews’s private lives contains allusions to novel’s subject matters such as Walter’s preoccupation with his child and the sexual impotence of Shandy males. The silly tone of the original novel is created in the film by playful screens such as screen split and ridiculous props such as a giant rubber womb. As a result, Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story is a very humorous and entertaining adaptation film which is faithful to the spirit of the original novel.
