Abstract
Objectives: An incidence rate of sexually transmitted diseases in Korea has been increased over the years but there are few health communication studies focusing on STDs. This study tried to emphasize need of public interest and more academic research regarding STDs and to provide a practical suggestions and baseline information to public health campaigns in the area. Methods: Based on Health Belief Model, this study conducted the survey with 372 young Korean adults (in their 20s). Results: The study results showed that in general respondents took the prevention actions(‘Using condom’ and ‘Reducing the number of sex partners’). Respondents’ intention to undergo STDs screening is also high, however, the number of people who actually undertook STDs screening is few. It suggests that intention of STDs screening is little associated with actual screening behavior. In addition, on the contrary to previous studies, the respondents having the high perceived susceptibility and with more sexual partners tend not to use condoms. Meanwhile, many respondents showed optimistic bias pertaining to STDs and the a group showing lower optimistic bias showed a high perceived susceptibility. Conclusions: The study results suggested that campaign message strategies emphasizing perceived benefitand self-efficacy should be considered in order to enhance STDs prevention and screening behaviors (intentions).
