古地圖로 본 尙州의 歷史文化

Abstract

This study examined frequency and importance of geographic features, continuity with the modern maps, and current names corresponding with the old place names on the base of 1480 place names which appeared at 18 historical maps of Sangju district made during 18th~20th centuries. And the results are as follows. The administrative division of Sangju district in Joseon Dynasty was mainly determined by the scope of work and characteristics of local administrative governor, and by the late Joseon Dynasty the area of Sangju was 1,678.1㎢, and had 31 myeons(subdivisions of a district). There is a certain continuity between modern and historical maps, and the notations of the points of the compass are changed from "子卯午酉’ in zodiac system to ‘北東南西’ in late 19th century. Though one of the road that called ‘Gallyeong" in Sangju was prohibited by the authority because of national security, it was still used in realty. And most major place names of Sangju in Joseon Dynasty are used today as ever.
