Abstract
This study aims to investigate the induction experiences of six novice elementary English teachers and their reflections on their teaching. It also examines their efforts to improve their instructional skills and their needs for professional development. The data included five journal entries and two interviews for each participant and were analyzed through content analysis. The major findings are as follows: First, the teachers expressed their induction experiences should be more effective to support their development. They had few experiences in formal English teacher education programs for novice teachers. However, they voluntarily participated in English professional development activities they thought they needed for their teaching. They commented the implementation of the clinical supervision should be more systematic and meaningful, focusing more on English language teaching. Due to interactions with peer and supervising teachers and administrators, the teachers had diverse informal induction experiences. Their induction experiences were also related to students and parents. Second, through reflections on their teaching, the teachers developed their instructional skills in classroom management, adapting lessons to students’ different English abilities, diverse classroom interactions, and use of L1 and L2. The teachers made efforts to enhance their own English abilities and English teaching methodology. In addition, they displayed their needs for substantial support as novice English teachers including needs for effective in-service and pre-service teacher education and for being provided with materials and manuals for teaching and evaluating students. This study provides teachers, teacher educators, and policy makers with important implications regarding induction programs for novice English teachers.
