Abstract
Contrary to the general criticism of pornography for its content, MacKinnon and Dworkin argues that pornography should be criticized because it subordinates women. Many have criticized the argument that pornography subordinates women as philosophically indefensible. Against this criticism, Langton argues that based on Austin's theory of speech act, the subordination claim can be philosophically defensible. Furthermore, Langton argues that the subordination claim is pretty plausible. Nevertheless, Langton's argument now faces much criticism. Some Critics argue that the subordination claim is still philosophically indefensible. The others criticize that the subordination claim is not plausible. This paper aims to examine the criticisms and their subsequent discussions and check whether Langton's argument can survive. For this, I will briefly introduce Langton's argument in chapter II. In III, I will examine Antony's criticism that the subordination claim is philosophically indefensible. In IV, I introduce Saul's objection to plausibility of subordination claim, and I will examine whether the criticism is successful. In V, I will discuss the argument of Bianchi against Saul and Mikkola against Bianchi.
