Abstract

Purpose: Our descriptive study analyzed the pressure injury care (PIC) performance of visiting nurses and examined factors associated with it to provide foundational evidence to develop interventions that enhance PIC practice. Methods: The participants of the study included 164 visiting nurses with at least six months of experience in home-visits and in providing pressure injury care. We collected data from August 29 to October 10, 2022 and analyzed it using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation, and multiple regression analysis with the SPSS WIN 22.0 program. Results: We observed significant differences in PIC performance of visiting nurses, which were specifically associated with gender (t=-2.34, p=.030) and source of evidence for PIC (F=4.17, p=.017). The PIC performance was positively correlated with knowledge of PIC (r=.28, p<.001) and self-efficacy for PIC (r=.32, p<.001). Knowledge of PIC was also positively correlated with self-efficacy for PIC (r=.27, p<.001). With an explanatory power of 17.6%, the PIC performance was significantly predicted by self-efficacy for PIC (β=.21, p=.006), knowledge of PIC (β=.20, p=.009), and gender (β=.18, p=.014). Conclusion: The results of our study indicate that strategies enhancing the knowledge of PIC and self-efficacy for PIC in visiting nurses will help to improve their performance. The limited explanatory power of our study suggests that future research should incorporate additional contextual and organizational factors as well as use objective indicators of performance.
