Abstract

· Research topics: Developing a Smart Helmet to support construction workers’ health and safety through airborne hazard detection and accident recognition. · Research background: Because workers at SOC (social overhead capital) construction sites operate in environments where the risks of exposure to airborne hazardous substances and of physical accidents are ever-present, technology-based support is required to safeguard their health and safety. · Differences from prior research: Existing cases remained single-purpose and thus fall short of coping with the simultaneous environmental and bodily hazards present on construction sites. Our work uniquely realizes an integrated sensing system that detects ambient hazardous agents as well as worker accident incidents. · Research method: A prototype was developed based on theoretical review, followed by empirical research to verify its usability through experiments. · Research results: We developed a safety-helmet system monitoring atmospheric pollutants concentrations and user activity states at construction sites and issuing external alerts in emergencies. Then, we validated the prototype’s usability by conducting experiments that simulated both environmental and physical hazard scenarios. · Contribution points and expected effects: By presenting a system assisting the health and safety of construction workers, this study is expected to promote further research and on their commercialization, ultimately contributing to a reduction in occupational accidents.
