Abstract

This paper focuses on opacity driven by allophonic alternation, mostly examining opacity cases in Canadian English and Japanese. It shows how this type of opacity can be treated within the Optimality Theory with Candidate Chains (OT-CC), a novel version of OT proposed by McCarthy(2006, 2007). It also shows what are the problems arising with OT-CC’s analysis of this type of opacity. In this paper, I argue that OT-CC cannot be compatible with the Richness of the Base in accounting for the situation where it is difficult to decide the direction of allophonic alternation, such as opacity occurring in the interaction of g-weakening and compound voicing called Rendaku in Japanese.
