Abstract
-Purpose:This study examined the structural impact of social isolation on suicidal ideation among Korean middle and high school students, verifying the mediating effect of negative emotion and the protective effects of self-esteem and school life satisfaction. -Methods:Data from 5,734 middle and high school students from the 2024 ‘Korean Children and Youth Rights Survey’ were analyzed using hierarchical multiple regression and the Sobel test. -Results:The main findings are as follows: First, suicidal ideation was significantly higher among female students and those who perceived their subjective economic status as relatively vulnerable or low. Second, social isolation was demonstrated to be the most powerful and critical environmental risk factor amplifying suicidal ideation. Third, negative emotion, representing internalized psychological distress, operated as a potent partial mediator connecting social isolation and suicidal ideation (Sobel Z=14.281, p<.001). Fourth, self-esteem and school life satisfaction functioned as significant negative protective factors directly mitigating suicidal ideation despite pervasive risk factors. -Conclusion:Based on these empirical results, practical policy alternatives were suggested, including an early screening system for isolated youth, the expansion of emotional care vouchers, and mandatory school-based programs to enhance adolescent self-esteem.
