이 논문은 진관사 태극기(보물, 1919년경)의 문화유산으로서 의미와 가치를 고찰하고 이를 토대로 인식과 수용의 방향을 성찰하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 진관사 태극기는 2009년 5월 서울시 진관사의 칠성각 건물을 해체·수리하는 과정에서 발견되었다. 태극기는 칠성각 내부의 벽체와 기둥 사이 은밀한 곳에서 독립운동 관련 신문과 문건(1919년 발행)을 감싼 상태로 발견되었다는 점, 일장기를 지우고 먹으로 태극과 4괘를 덧칠해 만들었다는 점, 불에 탄 듯한 흔적이 태극기에 남아 있다는 점, 태극기의 4괘가 대한민국임시정부 태극기의 4괘와 일치한다는 점 등에서 화제가 되었다. 논문에서는 발견 상황, 제작 방식, 함께 발견된 동반 자료의 측면으로 나누어 태극기의 의미를 살펴보았다. 현재까지 알려진 일제강점기 태극기 가운데 일장기를 개조해 만든 거의 유일한 경우이며, 임시정부와의 관련 속에서 실제 독립운동에 사용되었을 가능성이 높다. 아울러 태극기와 신문·문건을 사찰의 은밀한 곳에 감출 수밖에 없을 정도로 당시 상황이 급박했음을 알 수 있다. 진관사 태극기는 지난한 내력과 극적인 스토리가 두드러진다. 특히 제작-활용-감춤-발견까지 90년의 내력을 지니고 있으며 그 내력과 스토리의 흔적이 태극기에 상처처럼 고스란히 남아 있다. 이런 점에서 진관사 태극기는 항일독립운동 태극기로서의 역사성·상징성·대중성을 모두 갖춘 문화유산으로 평가할 수 있다.
Abstract
This paper explores the historical and cultural significance of the Jinguansa Taegeukgi, discovered in 2009 during the restoration of Chilseongak Hall at Jinguansa Temple in Seoul. Hidden within the building’s walls, the flag was wrapped in 1919 newspapers and independence movement documents. Uniquely, it was created by erasing the Japanese flag and painting the Taegeuk and four trigrams over it, with burn marks still visible. The trigrams match those of the Taegeukgi used by the Provisional Government of Korea, suggesting its link to independence activities. The Taegeukgi’s production method, concealment, and discovery collectively reveal its profound symbolic value as a testament to Korea’s resistance during Japanese occupation. Its 90 year journey—from creation and use to hiding and rediscovery—embodies historical endurance and emotional resonance, establishing the Jinguansa Taegeukgi as a rare cultural heritage artifact representing the spirit and struggle of the Korean independence movement.
