철원·김화 지역에서의 개신교 초기 선교는 19세기 말 김화 지역은 미국 남감리회, 철원지역은 미국 북장로회를 통해 거의 동시에 전개되었다. 두 지역 모두 초기에는 토착 전도인들에 의해 선교가 착수되었으며, 20세기 초에 이르러 남감리회의 하디(R. A. Hardie)와 북장로회의 웰본(A. G. Welbon) 선교사가 직접적으로 활동하면서 보다 실제적인 성과를 거두게 되었다. 두 지역 모두 교회가 설립된 시기는 1901년이며, 이후 양 지역에서 활발한 선교활동과 선교협력이 이루어졌다. 그러나 1908년 북장로회 선교사들이 철원에서 철수함으로써 두 지역은 모두 미국 남감리회에서 관할하게 되었다. 1908년 김화의 지경터교회는 독립구역으로 발전하였고, 1910년에 이르러서는 교회 34개소, 교인 835명에 이르는 규모로 성장하였다. 1900년대 초부터는 두 지역 모두 교회에서 설립한 신식학교들을 통해 강원북부지역 근대교육의 선구적 역할을 담당했다. 이러한 선교적 노력은 일제강점기 철원·김화 지역에서 기독교를 중심으로 한 독립운동과 사회운동이 활발히 전개될 수 있는 기반이 되었다.
Abstract
Early Protestant missionary efforts in the Cheorwon-Gimhwa region began almost simultaneously in the late 19th century, through the U. S. Southern Methodist Episcopal Church in Gimhwa and the U. S. Presbyterian Church in Cheorwon. In both areas, missions were initially undertaken by indigenous evangelists, and by the early 20th century, the direct work of missionaries R. A. Hardie, of the Southern Methodist Episcopal Church and A. G. Welbon of the Presbyterian Church led to more substantial results. Churches were established in both areas in 1901, and there has been active missionary activity and missionary cooperation in both areas ever since. However, the withdrawal of Northern Presbyterian missionaries in 1908 placed both areas under the jurisdiction of the Southern Methodist Conference. In 1908, Che-kyung-tu(Chi Kyung The) Church in Gimhwa became an independent circuit, and by 1910, it had grown to 34 churches and 835 members. Beginning in the early 1900s, both districts played a pioneering role in modern education in northern Gangwon Province through new schools established by the church. These missionary efforts paved the way for the development of Christian-oriented independence and social movements in the Cheorwon-Gimhwa region during the Japanese occupation.
