Abstract

-Background:Abdominal obesity is closely related to metabolic disorders and may be influenced by both inflammatory status and lifestyle behaviors. This study aimed to examine the independent and joint associations of an inflammatory score and a healthy lifestyle score with abdominal obesity among Korean adults. -Methods:This cross-sectional study included 1,994 adults aged 30–59 years from the baseline survey of the Korean Medicine Daejeon Citizen Cohort. Abdominal obesity was defined as a waist circumference of ≥90 cm in men and ≥85 cm in women. The inflammatory score was calculated as the sum of the standardized z-scores of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and white blood cell count. The healthy lifestyle score was constructed based on five lifestyle factors: alcohol consumption, smoking status, physical activity, sleep duration, and diet quality. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to estimate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for abdominal obesity. -Results:Participants with a moderate or high inflammatory score had higher odds of abdominal obesity than those with a low inflammatory score (moderate: odds ratio [OR]=1.72, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.32–2.24; high: OR=3.16, 95% CI: 2.44–4.09). A higher inflammatory score as a continuous variable was also associated with increased odds of abdominal obesity (OR=1.29, 95% CI: 1.20–1.38). Compared with participants with a healthy lifestyle score, those with an unhealthy lifestyle score had higher odds of abdominal obesity (OR=1.46, 95% CI: 1.13–1.89), while each one-point increase in the healthy lifestyle score was associated with lower odds of abdominal obesity (OR=0.87, 95% CI: 0.79–0.95). In the joint analysis, participants with both a high inflammatory score and an unhealthy lifestyle score showed the highest odds of abdominal obesity (OR=4.20, 95% CI: 2.71–6.51), although the interaction between the inflammatory score and healthy lifestyle score was not statistically significant (p for interaction=0.939). -Conclusion:These findings suggest that both inflammatory status and lifestyle factors are associated with abdominal obesity. Considering inflammatory status and lifestyle behaviors together may provide useful information for understanding abdominal obesity and related metabolic risk.
