New Graduated Nurses’ Experiences with Psychological Safety in Clinical Setting: A Qualitative Focus Group Study

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore newly graduated nurses’ experiences with psychological safety in clinical setting. Methods: Three focus group interviews were conducted with 12 newly graduated nurses employed in hospital settings. Data were collected from November 2021 to January 2022. Interviews were conducted non-face-to-face using an online video conferencing system. Collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: The analysis identified the following five themes with eleven subthemes: pressure stemming from the hierarchial structure, feeling supported, trust in the predictability of interpersonal response, despair about being stigmatized, and seeking psychological safety. Conclusion: Results of this study might inform the development of education programs for nurse managers, colleagues, and newly graduated nurses to promote psychological safety and improve organizational culture.
