Abstract
Carbon neutrality is the only element among ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) that is being planned and promoted under a Korean government-led 2050 scenario. However, research aimed at identifying the practical challenges faced by small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises (SMEs) in responding to carbon neutrality policies and bridging the gap between policy and field implementation remains limited. This study examines the factors influencing SMEs’ intention to adopt greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction facilities, applying a mixed-methods methodology and utilizing government support for carbon neutrality policies. First, in addition to a review of prior studies, focus group interviews (FGIs) were conducted with government officials, SME representatives considering facility adoption, and facility suppliers to identify benefit and sacrifice factors. Based on these factors, a firm-level survey was carried out, and 207 valid responses were used for empirical analysis. The results indicate that the benefit factors (i.e., perceived usefulness, economic benefit, and enhancement of corporate value/image) had significant positive effects on perceived value, whereas the sacrifice factors (i.e., perceived risk, perceived cost, and technological complexity) did not show statistically significant effects. This study is academically significant as it is the first attempt to empirically verify the factors influencing SMEs’ intention to adopt GHG reduction facilities through a mixed-methods approach. Furthermore, the findings are expected to promote the wider adoption of such facilities by SMEs and provide practical grounds for designing policies to achieve the government’s carbon neutrality goals.
