Abstract
Yangsoon Kim (Korea U)Geoffrey Hill’s Mercian Hymnsis in many respects a meditation on“EnglandEnglish history, English culture, the English People.” In theHymnsthe way Hill juxtaposes past and present is different from the way hedealt with atrocious history in the previous volumesFor the UnfallenandKing Log. The main difference is that history in the sequence is both publicand personal; here, the eighth-century Mercia under King Offa and themodern England in which Hill has grown up resonate. Accordingly,Mercian Hymnscan be also read as a personal sequence which construespast and present in private terms.Considering “a double sense” and “parallelism of thought” in the Hymnsas a central axis of interpreting it, this study pursues how Mercian Hymnsflows not only along the axis between past and present, the vital linkbetween public and private realms, but also along a deep texture of lan-guage. There is no chronological progression; instead, the present momentis enriched by all the past simultaneously. The Hymnsshifts imperceptibly“between Hill and Offa, Hill as Offa, past and present, past as presence.”
