Abstract

This paper proposes a deceptive attack method built on the NIDSGAN framework that minimally perturbs per-flow features so that traffic preserves functionality while being classified as Benign by the target detector. Using NSL-KDD and CIC-IDS2017, we attack three heterogeneous NIDS—AlertNet, Kitsune, and ACID—and perform model-specific sensitivity analyses to preserve detection-critical features while selectively perturbing low-saliency ones. The generator is trained with a DeepNet-based detector as the internal critic (discriminator), steering outputs toward benign-like distributions and balancing detectability and stealth. We further introduce a multi-feature masking strategy that fuses quantitative feature importance with model-driven sensitivity to enhance evasion. Experiments show that, even under feature-reduction (masking) settings, the method achieves an average attack success rate (ASR) above 85% while maintaining high baseline detection accuracy.
