Abstract
This study aims to explore the meaning of orality and literality in early literacy education by focusing on language development during the early literacy period. To this end, the concept of orality and literality was established from the perspective of modality, and orality and literality were revealed to have a multi-layered degree of relationship. Orality and literality in the early literacy period develop mutually as ‘oral language with orality, written language with orality, written language with literality, and oral language with literality.’ Based on this perspective, the literacy events appearing in the first grade Korean language textbooks for elementary school students were analyzed in terms of ‘text, text type, and learning activity’ to explore the aspects of orality and literality experienced by children. Through this exploration, his study proposed an educational approach that can foster the development of ‘oral language with orality, written language with orality, written language with literality, and oral language with literality’ while experiencing the spectrum of orality and literality in multiple layers.
