Abstract
Theoretical investigations were conducted to analyze birefringence, a key performance indicator of polarization-maintaining large-mode-areadouble-clad fiber (PLMA DCF) for high-power fiber lasers. Using the finite element method, the influence of doping ratios in the core and stress-applying parts (SAPs) on the birefringence of a 20/400 mm PLMA DCF was numerically investigated. The doping ratios in both regions were variedby up to +20% to observe changes in birefringence characteristics. In the core region, no change in birefringence was observed, however, a significantincrease in overall tensile stress was noted at the core-cladding interface. In the SAP region, birefringence increased up to +15% before decreasing at +20%, while a substantial change in tensile stress distribution was similarly observed in the cladding region.
