Abstract

This study aimed to provide foundational data for developing upper clothing patterns suitable for women with large breasts, defined as a difference of 15.0 cm or more between bust and underbust circumference, which is C-cup or larger. The study examined wearing conditions, purchasing behavior, preferences, and areas for improvement among this group. The findings revealed that many women with large breasts were unaware of their accurate bust size and tended to prefer slightly loose-fitting upper garments for daily wear. Most participants preferred purchasing clothing from online platforms, favoring garments with adequate sizing and stretchable materials. Satisfaction with bras was notably low, indicating that current products do not adequately support large breasts. Despite their larger busts, participants generally preferred moderately loose garments rather than overly loose styles. Due to difficulties in achieving a proper fit, they often purchased upper clothing in sizes larger than their actual body measurements. The most frequent complaints included gaping front buttons and rising front hems, particularly in blouses and shirts. Raising the arms while wearing blouses or jackets was cited as the most uncomfortable motion, primarily due to front gaping. Furthermore, the study identified a limited variety of clothing designs for women with large busts, reflecting insufficient design consideration and pattern development for this body type. Key purchase considerations included bust fit, coverage design, and prevention of front gaping. Based on these results, the following implications are proposed: (1) development of clothing patterns that reflect the body characteristics of women with large breasts; (2) functional designs aligned with actual wearing behavior; (3) greater diversity in design options; and (4) thoughtful selection of materials and fabrics. Future studies should examine a wider range of bust sizes and body types to identify broader fit-related factors and to develop clothing patterns and designs that better accommodate women with large busts.
