Abstract

In the contexts of a rapidly aging society and digital transformation, promoting older adults’ digital literacy and their physical, mental, and cognitive health has become a key concern in social welfare. This study examined the effect of digital literacy on cognitive function, focusing on the mediating role of depression and the moderated mediation effect of economic activity. Data of 9,951 older adults from the 2023 National Survey of Older Koreans were analyzed using SPSS 22.0 and PROCESS Macro. Results showed as follows. First, higher digital literacy was linked to lower depression and better cognitive function. Second, depression partially mediated the link between digital literacy and cognitive function. Third, this mediating effect of depression was more pronounced among older adults not engaged in economic activity. This study empirically demonstrated the importance of digital literacy and economic activity in promoting cognitive health and discussed implications for social welfare.
