Abstract

This article aims to examine the poetic world of Dunheon Yim Byeong‐chan, a bureaucrat and head of Uibyeong (civil army) who worked in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Yim Byeong‐chan(林炳瓚) started Uibyeong with Choi Ik‐hyeon(崔益鉉) in Taein(泰仁) in 1906, and he worked at the Headquarter of Korean Independence Righteous Civil Army after Imperial Japan’s forced merger of Korea. The poems of Yim Byeong‐chan rarely include works of Eumpungnongwolryu (category of poetry enjoying leisurely nature/吟風弄月類). The sincerity coming from the life of patriotism is consistent with his works. Sincerity is different from weak feelings and somatic feelings. It has the power to rebound even in times of despair and never gives up on a positive future. His poems can be divided into three periods such as Taein Uibyeong period~sushima(對馬島) exile period; after returning home~Headquarter of Korean Independence Righteous Civil Army period; and Geomundo(巨文島) exile period. The works of the first period emphasize the enhancement of good cause, which is Taein Uibyeong’s goal, and the righteousness not yielding to the pressure of Imperial Japan flows to the bottom of his works. In the second period, there are various emotional reactions to Imperial Japan’s forced merge of Korea appearing in his works, but it can be seen that he was not buried by such feelings and worried about the direction of the new anti‐Japan movement. The characteristic is the appearance of various forms related to “Yimunjemu (forestalling a sword with a pen/以文制武).” In the third period, although Geomundo’s natural objects confirm his values ​​and refine his mental attitude, he overcame private feelings and in a public dimension his concerns are seen in the state and people. The life of Yim Byeong‐chan is summarized in patriotism and love of the people, and it is a process of realizing his beliefs armed with righteousness. However, he knew how to handle the situation and coped flexibly in terms of anti‐Japan methods. As seen in the name of Bugwae(復卦) that often appears in his works, he had a conviction that light would come again there one day. The core of Yim Byeong‐chan’s poems can be the indomitable righteousness and the optimistic attitude toward the world.
