Abstract

This paper aims to examine the hiddenness of God and the incompleteness of a man in Peter Carey’s Oscar and Lucinda in light of Blaise Pascal’s concept of wager. In Pensées Pascal points out the danger of wagers and diversions in which he is engaged to feel some consolation in life. Pascal argues that, despite his condition of wretchedness and corruption, he should be convinced that God exists, he is saved by God, and thereby he respects and serves God with all his heart. This is why the human condition without faith is the most foolish and unhappy. Such as, Oscar’s life and death in Oscar and Lucinda get entangled in the hidden god who is partly concealed and partly revealed. Oscar selects his faith through throwing lots; he discusses God’s existence adopting Pascal’s wager; he bets in gambling in the name of God; and he decides to establish a glass church to receive Lucinda’s love. With this approach, Oscar is shown as a weak and imperfect man who knows God without realizing his condition of wretchedness, by sinking himself encaged inside of the glass church.
