Abstract

-Purpose: As health issues among young people transitioning from adolescence to early adulthood have gained increasing global attention, the systematic comparison of health-related surveys targeting adolescents and college students has become essential for advancing life-course health monitoring. -Methods:This study aimed to compare the measurement domains and structural characteristics of 17 major health surveys conducted in Korea and internationally for adolescents and college students, using the social ecological model as an analytical framework. Survey questionnaires and codebooks publicly available from each administering organization were collected between May and July 2026, and health-related variables were extracted and classified into five ecological levels: Individual, Interpersonal, Organizational, Community, and Public Policy. -Results:The analysis revealed that both adolescent and college student surveys comprehensively covered variables at the Individual, Interpersonal, and Organizational levels, while Community and Public Policy level variables remained limited across both groups. A measurement gap was identified in the transitional period around ages 18-19, where few surveys covered both groups simultaneously, particularly in Korean national data. Adolescent surveys tended to include developmental variables such as ADHD-related and neurodevelopmental indicators, whereas college student surveys incorporated domains specific to early adulthood, including food and housing insecurity, resilience, loneliness, functional impairment, and campus climate. Domestic college student surveys showed relatively limited coverage of mental health service utilization and help-seeking barriers. -Conclusion:These findings provide preliminary evidence that may inform the development of more comprehensive and life-course-sensitive health survey instruments for adolescents and college students in Korea and beyond.
