Structural Relations in Korean Discourse Generics

Abstract

Kwak, Eun-Joo. 2002. Structural Relations in Korean Discourse Generics. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 27-1, 25-46. Carlson and Spejewski (1997) provide a groundwork on the semantics of discourse generics, especially generic sentences followed by subordinated episodic sequences. At the same time, their study raises several interesting issues such as the boundary problems of discourse generics and the structural relations of dependent generics. In this study, I address these problems with Korean data, considering event structures. Critically reviewing Carlson and Spejewski's work, I argue that the semantics of dependent generics needs not only 'reference time' but also 'reference space'. (Sejong University)
