초록

Often associated with horror, Stephen King’s Carrie (1974) is more precisely aligned with the suburban gothic, a subgenre that examines the psychic and ideological contradictions of postwar American domesticity. Carrie’s transformation into the monstrous is not an individualized descent into madness or supernatural aberration, but a structural effect of the cultural logic governing white, middle-class suburbia. This essay argues that Carrie exemplifies the suburban gothic, in which monstrosity is produced through overlapping mechanisms of emotional repression, bodily abjection, and failed female solidarity. I further position whiteness as a gothic terrain marked by anxiety over darkness, and contend that Carrie’s destruction functions as a ritualized, recursive spectacle through which suburbia reasserts its illusion of safety and order. Finally, by drawing attention to the overlooked character of Annie, I locate Carrie within a broader tradition of American gothic recurrence and its cultural imaginations.
