Abstract
The use of social media among college students is prevalent, and its relationship to attachment and experiential avoidance is unknown. A growing body of research examines the addiction of social media where users can have close relationship with meaningful others. The purpose of this study is to examine the mediating effects of undergraduate students’ experiential avoidance in the relationship between the adult attachment and social media addiction. For the study, 221 college students have completed a paper survey assessing the perception of adult attachment, experiential avoidance, and social media addiction. Data were analyzed to determine what, if any, relationship exists between the three mentioned above. Results are as follows: First, social media addiction had a positive correlation with attachment style(attachment anxiety, attachment avoidance) and experiential avoidance. Second, hierarchical regression analysis showed that the attachment anxiety, the subset of insecure adult attachment, was mediated by the experiential avoidance in the relationship with the social media addiction. It means attachment anxiety had a direct influence on social media addiction and simultaneously had an indirect influence on experiential avoidance. Third, in the case of female college students, the relationship between the adult attachment and social media addiction was mediated by the experiential avoidance. Specifically, the attachment anxiety was partially mediated and the attachment avoidance was totally mediated by the experiential avoidance in the relationship with the social media addiction. It means that the social media addiction of female students are influenced by both insecure attachment style and the experiential avoidance may be need to be emphasized to a greater extent than male students. On the contrary, in the case of male students, the mediation effects was not verified. Therefore, in order to reduce the social media addiction, the differential intervention is needed according to the attachment style and gender. Based on these results, possible directions for future research were also suggested.
