수사학의 3분법적 범주: 은유, 환유, 제유

본고는 4분법의 수사학이 지닌 논리적 불안정과 왜곡을 지적하고 그 대안으로 3분법의 수사학을 제시하였다. 4분법의 수사학은 은유, 제유, 환유, 반어가 논리적 층위에 있어서 균형을 이루지 못했을 뿐만 아니라 각각의 요소가 독립적인 자질을 제대로 드러내지 못한다는 점에서 문제가 있다. 이에 반하여 3분법의 수사학은 범주에 대한 인식을 전체의 준거 틀로 삼아 세 개의 비유를 재배치하고 있다는 점에서 논리적 균형감을 지니고 있다. 3분법적 수사학에서 각 요소, 즉 은유, 환유, 제유를 나누는 데 가장 적절한 기준은 범주적 관점이다. 간단하게 정리하자면 은유는 비유 기표와 비유 기의가 속한 범주가 이질적이라는 점에서 범주와 범주 간의 수평적 이동에 바탕을 두고 있는 초월의 수사학이다. 환유는 범주 내의 수평적 이동에 기반을 두는 내재적 수사학이다. 여기에서 비유 기표와 비유 기의는 하나의 상위 범주 내의 대등한 요소로 구성된다. 제유는 범주 간의 수직적 이동을 바탕으로 하는 내재적 초월의 수사학이다. 이때 비유 기표와 비유 기의는 범주의 크기, 즉 상위범주와 하위범주의 관계를 형성하고 있는 것이다. 이를 도표로 정리하면 다음과 같다.
Abstract
This paper proposes the trinal category of rhetoric(metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche), by assuming a critical attitude toward the tradition of four master tropes(metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche and irony). The rhetoric of four master tropes has some problems; it has a logical lack of balance and it's constituents have not distinctive quality. But that of three master tropes has logical balance based on categorial sense. An appropriate criteria of taxonomy in the rhetoric of three master tropes is a categorial sense. Metaphor, in which a tropical signifier and a tropical signified belong to another category, is the rhetoric of transcendence based on a horizontal transfer from one category to another category. Metonymy, in which a tropical signifier and a tropical signified belong to same category, is the rhetoric of immanence based on a horizontal transfer in same category. Synecdoche, in which a tropical signifier and a tropical signified belong to another category, is the rhetoric of immanent transcendence based on a vertical transfer from one category to a higher category. The following figure should help to understand this paper's proposal.
