Abstract
The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of the squid (Todarodes pacificus) liver andgrape seed oils on the serum lipids of rats (male Wistar, 4 weeks age) fed high cholesterol. Diet of the basal (BA) diet group was prepared according to the recommendation of theAmerican Institute of Nutrition (AIN-93G), using 7% soybean oil as lipid source. Experimentalgroups were divided into three groups according to dietary lipid sources; the control (CO)group (soybean oil 7% + cholesterol 1%), eco-friendly squid liver oil (EFSO) group (EFSO7% + cholesterol 1%) and grape seed oil (GO) group (GO 7% + cholesterol 1%). Afterfeeding for 4 weeks, the serum levels of triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (Total-C),LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) and VLDL-cholesterol (VLDL-C) in the EFSO group were significantly lower than those of the CO group (P<0.05). On the other hand, Total-C and LDL-C levels showed no significant differences between the GO and CO groups, while TG, VLDL-C and HDL-C levels were similar to those of the EFSO group. Atherogenic index ofthe EFSO and GO groups were lowered by a half levels of CO group. By the way, whiteand brown adipose tissue contents had no significantly difference among all the dietarygroups. These results suggest that EFSO rich in n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids was veryeffective dietary lipid source on the lowering LDL-C or TG in serum of rats.
