초록

Examining the meanings that people gain through leisure from a cross-cultural perspective is a growing area. Leisure research focusing on leisure meanings has implications for both stress coping and human development. This study involved the development of the Global Leisure Meanings Scale (GLMS) targeting Korean immigrants in Canada. GLM refers to people’s generalized constellation of meanings in life gained through leisure over the life course. Employing an exploratory factor analysis, the six dimensions of the GLMS (alpha value of .81) were identified as follows: (a) group harmony, (b) self-development, (c) leisure ethnic identity, (d) leisure friendship, (e) escaping pressure, and (f) passing time. The development of culturally grounded leisure meanings scale, the GLMS, relevant to an immigrant population represents a valuable contribution to the leisure scholarship.
