초록
This article aims at assessing the assumption, put forward in some linguistic works, that natural‐language grammars vary as to their 'syntactic' or 'pragmatic' ('discourse') orientation — syntax‐oriented languages being typically illustrated by Western Indo‐ European, and discourse‐oriented languages by various Asian languages (including Korean). Reviewing the empirical evidence presented by Li & Thompson (1975, 1979) and Huang (1994, 2000), which crucially involves covert and overt anaphora, and topiccomment structures, I counter‐argue that crosslinguistic variation arises from sentence grammar rather than from pragmatics, and that syntactic and pragmatic factors are equally relevant and complementary across languages for the description and analysis of anaphora, topicalization, and other phenomena linking together linguistic forms and information structure.
