Abstract

This study is to explore the progress of two massacres which were happened in the early stage of Korean War. The first massacres was the slaughter of the Members of the National Guidance Alliance. The second one was the massacre of civilians that took place in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk of South Korea. This research identifies not only individuals who had committed these crimes but also the way that slaughterers had been done to complete the their duty which had been charged; especially I focus on what the policy was which forced them to involve the massacres. As a result of that, I find out that the slaughterers actively participated in killing civilians as they played important roles. This article describes consecutive massacres which were happened right after Korean War outbreak. Jang Seok-yoon, the head of Korea National Police Bureau, ordered to kill members of the National Guidance Alliance; June 28 1950, Jang dho-young, the intelligence director of Korean Army ordered to kill collaborators of both Korean Communist Party and the National Guidance Alliance; a day of July in 1950, in Daegu, Cho Byung-Och, the minister of Home affair of South Korea ordered to kill the presumed who engaged to communist. The police killed them in 5~6 places including Ka Chang Gol. Jang Seok-yoon, Jang dho-young, and Cho Byung-Och who were in responsibility of massacres were high-ranking government officials. It was also true that all three commanders were Christians. Learning from the fact that three commanders were Christians, the thesis seeks to describe the reasons that those Christians played roles in carrying out massacres. A result of the research is that the anticommunism dominating thought of both those Korean officials and some parts of Christians allowed to provide a motivation to commit massacres.
