Abstract

Gradual has been subject to confusing discussions by liturgical books and theorists focusing on classification and setting of each mode for some works. Definition and setting of a mode not only characterize the chants but also feature each mode. The purpose of this study is to analyze the problems involving setting of gradual modes and thereby, provide for some theoretical ground for it. One of the characteristics of gradual is lack of mode VI. In contrast, mode V or authentic for mode VI accounts for as much as 44%(58 works) of the total 132 gradual works, and thus, characterizes a bright tone or melismatic in overall terms. Other modes (appearing in 74 works) except for mode V make setting of modes confusing due to transposition of move II or mixed-uses of mode I, II, III and IV. The characteristics of the graduals identified through this analysis are mixed-uses of modes, common axis for the same motive and the resultant weakening of structural major notes of modes and less importance of finalis. Hence, wider ambituses would develop, departing from the limited ambituses of certain modes.108 Gradual would depart from the limited ambituses or the most important element or characteristic of modes and thus, develop from 8 modes toward 12 ones. Namely, the gradual would expand and develop the function of modes for chants into Ionian and Aeloian and thereby, establish a ground for major and minor scales based on modes and consequently, a theoretical basis for tonality.
