Abstract

This study explores key factors associated with depression in young adults experiencing social withdrawal (hikikomori). It compares and analyzes factors associated with depression in the early stage (less than one year) and the mid-late stage (more than one year). This study utilized data from the 2022 Youth Life Survey, focusing on a sample of 338 socially withdrawn young adults who reported voluntarily staying at home. The study examines the association between personal, health, economic and employment, and social support factors and depression. The findings are as follows: First, in the early stage, significant factors associated with depression included educational attainment (-), subjective health status (-), suicidal ideation (+), burnout experience (+), and smartphone addiction (+). Second, in the mid-late stage, significant factors included educational attainment (+), happiness (-), suicidal ideation (+), income below the median level (+), and family support when feeling depressed (-). Notably, suicidal ideation was a significant predictor of higher depression levels in both stages. However, lower education levels were associated with higher depression in the early stage, while higher education levels were linked to increased depression in the mid-late stage. By identifying differences in factors associated with depression across social withdrawal stages, this study highlights the need for stage-specific recovery strategies to address depression.
