Abstract

The purpose of this study is to calculate the number of additional milking days according tocalving interval, to calculate the amount of milk yield for the additional milking through thelactation curve parameter estimated by the incomplete Gamma model, and to economic analysisof the additional milking. The data of 2,072 lactation records was obtained from the Dairy HerdImprovement program run by Dairy Cattle Improvement Center of National AgriculturalFederation of Korea. Lactation records were collected from primiparous and multiparous cowscalving between Jan. 2010 to Dec. 2012. The estimated lactation curves were drawn usingWood model based on actual milk yield records, and NLIN Procedure of SAS program(ver. 9.2). The estimated lactation functions using Wood model for primiparous and multiparous wereyt = 18.00t0.189e-0.00231t and yt = 24.73t0.181e-0.00315t, respectively. In the case of primiparous, it isdesirable to keep the optimal calving interval of 400 days or less for the herds having an milkyield amount of 8,000 kg or less, and it is desirable to keep the optimal calving interval of400 to 500 days for the herds having an milk yield amount of 8,000 kg or more. In the caseof multiparous, it is desirable to keep the optimal calving interval of 400 days or less for theherds having an milk yield amount of 9,000 kg or less, and 400 to 500 days for the herdshaving an milk yield amount of greater than 9,000 kg. In the case of the herds having an milkyield amount of greater than 11,000 kg, net profit increases as the calving interval increases. But, for the next pregnancy and calving, it may be desirable to maintain the calving intervalbetween 450 and 500 days.
