(Chronicle of Thomas the Presbyter),

Abstract

This study examines the scholarly and missiological im plications of the ongoing debate surrounding the historicity of Muhammad, a foundational figure whose prophetic authority and exemplary status shape the core identity of Islamic faith and doctrine. Traditional Islamic narratives--comprising the Qur’ān, Hadīth collections, sīra literature, and classical exe getical works--were composed at least 150 years after Mu hammad’s death, raising fundamental questions concerning their reliability, historical distance, and socio-political context. Responding to such issues, the revisionist school in Western academia has increasingly employed archaeological findings, epigraphic data, numismatic evidence, and a range of non-Is lamic sources (Syriac, Armenian, Greek, and others) in order to reconstruct the early history of Islam and reassess the his torical existence of Muhammad. This study surveys several key non-Islamic sources--in cluding the Dome of the Rock inscription(691-692 CE), Ar ab-Sasanian coinage from the mid-7th century, the Doctrina Jacobi(ca. 634-640), the Chronicle of Thomas the Presbyter( ca. 640s), and the writings of the Armenian bishop Sebeos( ca. 660s)--to illuminate how Muhammad was perceived in contemporary external records. These materials portray Mu hammad variously as a military leader, political figure, or reli gious reformer emphasizing monotheism, thereby revealing the evolving self-understanding of early Arab communities as they transitioned from tribal confederations to a distinct religious movement. Furthermore, the study evaluates methodological trends in modern Islamic origins research--from tradition alism and source-critical approaches to skeptical revisionism and neo-revisionism-- highlighting the emergence of isnād cum-matn analysis as a tool for reassessing the authenticity and development of Islamic traditions. The debate over Muhammad’s historicity carries significant implications for Christian mission in Muslim-majority contexts. Because Muhammad constitutes a non-negotiable pillar of Islamic faith, aggressive or unilateral critiques of his historicity risk hindering meaningful engagement. Effective missiological approaches therefore require an empathetic understanding of insider perspectives, careful analysis of the historical formation of Islamic traditions, prudent use of academic findings, and long-term investment in developing competent Islamic stud ies specialists. This study demonstrates that the debate over Muhammad’s historicity goes beyond mere historical criticism, presenting an important theological and missiological reflection for understanding the Muslim world and bearing witness to the gospel with wisdom.
