A Comparison of Threshold Anxieties According to the Existence of Information Prior to Electrical Stimulation

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether or not the physical therapist' sexplanation of the treatment prior to electrical stimulation affects the subjects level ofanxiety. Eighty healthy subjects participated in this study and were assigned either tothe experimental group recelvmg information on the treatment (nl=40) or to the controlgroup not receiving information on the treatment (nz=40). Transcutaneus ElectricalNerve Stimulation (TENS), a sphygomamometer and the Spielberger State AnxietyScale Questionnaire were used to investigate the threshold of anxiety. Analysis of datarevealed significant differences in pulse and diastolic blood pressure compared to thecontrol group when the subjects were stimulated electrically after receiving informationOn the treatment. We found significant differences between the two groups. The results of the study indicate that the patient’ s anxiety can be reduced by the physicaltherapist‘s explanation on the treatment.
