Abstract

YanTaiMoYuan is a collection of original writings, poetry, letters, and artwork exchanged between the Korean scholar Jiang Wei and Chinese literati of the Qing Dynasty upon his arrival in Beijing and during his diplomatic mission to China. The collection includes two prefaces by Qing scholars, four letters, nine poems comprising seventeen pieces, three inscriptions with four pieces, one painting, and a three-page list of Chinese literati’s names. These works were received by Jiang Wei during his stay in Beijing in the 12th (1874) and 13th (1875) years of King Gojong’s reign from Chinese scholars such as Zhang Shizhun, Wu Hong’en, Wu Hongmao, Huang Yu, Xu Fu, Zhang Jiaxiang, Cai Shouqi, Li Youfen, Chen Fushou, Ao Cexian, Gao Lunyuan, and Fang Renjie. YanTaiMoYuan not only fills the gap in direct materials on Jiang Wei’s interactions with Chinese scholars but also holds significant cultural, historical, and artistic value, serving as an important cultural relic and historical document. The original works exchanged between Chinese and Korean scholars, documented in YanTaiMoYuan, provide rich materials for understanding the private diplomatic realities and specific details of the international situations of Yan Tai during that period.
