초록

Since 1910, Othello has been adapted into movies. The role of Othello had always been portrayed by a white actor in black face. Parker broke this tradition by casting a famous African American actor, Laurence Fishburne to portray a black man, Othello. Parker also cast a renowned Shakespearean actor/director, Kenneth Branagh as Iago. Although Othello is the named character in the title, Parker allows Branagh to dominate the scenes and cuts part of Othello's dialogue. One could assume that Parker has blatantly given all the power in the movie to white characters, but the movie has been examined to find many subtle ways the director has given influence and power back to the women and Othello. So, this adaptation is not as racist as it may seem upon first viewing and deserves another examination.
