Abstract
This study examined the dual mediating effects of emotion dysregulation and self-compassion on the relationship between rejection sensitivity and relationship addiction, defined as a compulsive pattern of seeking and maintaining relationships despite negative consequences. A sample of 371 Korean adults (aged 19-39) completed an online survey measuring rejection sensitivity, relationship addiction, emotion dysregulation, and self-compassion. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS Statistics 22.0, with mediating effects tested through PROCESS Macro models 4 and 6. The analysis revealed significant correlations among all variables studied. While emotion dysregulation demonstrated a significant mediating effect between rejection sensitivity and relationship addiction, self-compassion alone did not yield a significant mediating effect. However, the sequential dual mediating effects of emotion dysregulation and self-compassion were confirmed in the relationship between rejection sensitivity and relationship addiction. The findings indicate that individuals with higher rejection sensitivity experience greater emotion dysregulation, which in turn leads to relationship addiction through diminished self-compassion. This study advances our understanding of relationship addiction by emphasizing the crucial roles of emotion regulation capacity and self-compassion in developing prevention and treatment strategies for individuals with high rejection sensitivity.
