Abstract
The purpose of this study is to introduce "e-Apple," a newly developed ICT-integrated language curriculum and to explore the appropriateness of implementing "e-Apple" into English classes for six graders in Korea. "e-Apple" is e-NIE (electronic News in Education) project, which was designed for learning English with My Apple News, English newspaper for children, weekly issued by Joonang Ilbo. The goal of this project is to improve quality of English curriculum for non-regular/extra classes offered by most of the elementary schools by suggesting standardized ICT-enhanced English lessons. The data analysis from the qualitative research of implementing "e-Apple" into the two elementary school English classes yielded the meaningful finding. "e-Apple" seems to have strong potential to effectively function as a standardized English curriculum and to improve the problems in Korean elementary English classes if the following study results are more carefully reconsidered. First, too specific lesson plans were not applicable to fairly different educational settings whereas the sample activities and worksheets were effectively utilized. Second, assigning a clearer instructional role of each content area was needed to design the web functions more appropriately. Third, theme-based content and instruction attracted students' interest and also helped students' understanding of insufficiently graded English texts. Fourth, some entertaining elements, jokes and problem-solving tasks, held students' attention more than other motivating elements, such as visual attractions or advanced technology.
