Abstract

This study examines the artistic value of Soswaewon 48 Scenes, a representative work of Song Jun-young (1936–2016), one of Korea’s leading dance artists and educators. As the first Korean creative dance drama to adopt a traditional garden as its central motif, the work offers an important perspective on the aesthetic characteristics of dance originating from the Honam region. Using literature review, interviews, and analysis of performance videos and related materials, the study situates the work within its regional and philosophical context. Conceived and choreographed by Song, the work explores themes such as the “spirit of non-contrivance” in nature, a philosophy of life, and the Korean scholarly spirit. These ideas resonate with Laozi’s concept of wuwei ziran from an ecological perspective and trace the roots of the seonbi ethos to the pungnyu ideal of the Silla-era Hwarang tradition. The choreography reveals three key aesthetic qualities: the unadorned naturalism of sobakmi marked by simplicity and rustic charm; the beauty of moderation reflected in the seonbi’s disciplined restraint; and an aspiration toward essential beauty grounded in refined artistic cultivation. The pungnyu spirit is expressed through meot (stylish grace), supported by an overall flow imbued with the distinctive heung (vibrant spirit) of the region, which is rooted in improvisation. Reinterpreted through a modernist approach to creative dance, these regional aesthetics highlight the interaction between tradition and contemporaneity. By re-examining region-based creative dance dramas, this study expands the narrative and philosophical horizons of Korean creative dance and contributes to a deeper understanding of its artistic value.
